County Seeks Applicants for Audit Committee Member

Deschutes Services Building in Bend

Deschutes County is accepting applications from community members interested in volunteering for the County’s Audit Committee. This unpaid role focuses on fostering continuous improvement, accountability, transparency, and trust in local government.

Unlike other county committees that serve specific functions, the Audit Committee gains insights into and evaluates programs throughout the organization. This year audits will include elections, the County’s response to homelessness, and evaluating the Sheriff’s auto and body cameras.

“The Audit Committee is about more than just checking boxes to give the appearance of accountability,” said County Internal Auditor Elizabeth Pape. “The Committee is a cornerstone of the County’s commitment to transparency, integrity, and improvement. Please consider joining us to work in support of sustaining trust and fiscal responsibility in Deschutes County.”

Appointed by the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC), the Audit Committee plays a role in overseeing County audit activities. Committee tasks include:

  • Reviewing and commenting on the Internal Auditor’s list of future audit topics
  • Addressing audit findings and recommendations, including raising issues for the BOCC’s consideration
  • Assisting in selecting external auditors to annually review and certify County financial statements
  • Overseeing both internal and external audit operations

The Audit Committee meets every other month at the Deschutes County Services Building, 1300 NW Wall St. in Bend. A remote option is also available.

Those passionate about enhancing Deschutes County programs are encouraged to apply at deschutes.org/volunteer. Applicants must be registered to vote in Deschutes County, and having experience with local government or business is beneficial.

More information is available on the Audit Committee webpage.
