Environmental Health programs & services benefit the entire community, including: county residents, tourists, visitors, and businesses. Anyone who eats food prepared in a restaurant, temporary food booth, or institutional setting (such as a cafeteria), or swims in a pool, benefits from the inspection process. Tourists can more safely enjoy the many outdoor festivals, restaurants, and travel accommodations in Deschutes County. Businesses also benefit from having a safe community that attracts visitors and encourages residents to use their services.

The Deschutes County Environmental Health Department’s Indoor Air Quality Program was developed to improve the health of Deschutes County’s citizens by reducing exposure to indoor air contaminants.

A "vector" is any organism capable of transmitting disease. Some examples are fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and rodents. Vectors are able to spread disease to humans by biting, burrowing into skin, or contaminating living spaces. Deschutes County Environmental Health provides professional health, safety and sanitation inspections to Child Care Centers, Certified Family Child Care homes and residential treatment centers.
Oregon and Deschutes County strive to modernize the way public health interacts with the community. As a result, Deschutes County has hired new positions with an aim to bridge the gaps between communities and the resources they need. Through outreach and education, we hope to improve access to safe food, water, clean air, and resources to support disease prevention among vulnerable communities in our county.
