Who should be tested for STIs and HIV

 

Below are the STI/HIV screening recommendations. If you are not sure if you should be tested or have questions, call 541-322-7155 to speak with a staff member.

Chlamydia and gonorrhea

  • At least annually for sexually active people <25 years old
  • At least annually for sexually active adults 25 or older if potential exposure to STIs or HIV
  • Rectal and pharyngeal testing recommended for people engaging in oral and/or anal sex

Syphilis

  • At least once for sexually active people due to recent increase of syphilis in Central Oregon, more often if potential exposure to STIs or HIV
  • Each time a person is tested for other STIs or HIV

HIV

  • At least once for sexually active people due to recent increase of new HIV infections in Central Oregon, and more often if potential exposure to STIs or HIV
  • Each time a person is tested for other STIs

In Oregon, anyone can consent to their own HIV/STI testing, including teens.

Where to get tested

 

Many local option exist for accessing STI and HIV testing services. Below are some options for accessing STI/HIV testing:

  • Your healthcare provider
  • Deschutes County Health Services outreach van
  • Deschutes County Health Services STI/HIV Program (low or no-cost services)*
  • Free self-collected home testing kits from Take Me Home
  • Free self-collected home testing kits for syphilis and HIV from STD Check. You must call in your request. See instructions.

*If you need testing or treatment for an STI or HIV, but don't have a healthcare provider or cannot get an appointment, we can help! Call the confidential STI line at 541-322-7155 for help with questions and/or referrals.

Deschutes County Health Services STI/HIV Program provides the following clinical services by appointment only:

  • Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, and hepatitis C testing
  • PrEP for HIV prevention
  • Treatment for people who test positive for an STI and/or HIV and testing and treatment for their sexual partners
