Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)
CISM in Deschutes County
- Providing Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) debriefing in response to catastrophic events impacting first responders, health care providers, social services professionals, school professionals, and distressing situations impacting the physical or psychological well being of large groups of community members.
What is a CISM:
- CISM is an intervention which occurs 1-10 days after a crisis. CISM is developed specifically for supporting others responding to a traumatic event. Trained professionals lead individuals or groups through a structured process to help those involved share their experience, emotions, learn about stress reactions and symptoms, and give referrals if further help is needed.
- Examples of situations that may benefit from a CISM include:
- Traumatic Events—such as mass casualty incidents, line of duty deaths, or exposure to violence or abuse
- High Stress Scenarios—such as hostage situations or triaging life or death situations for medical attention
- Personal Loss—such as the death of a friend, family member or colleague
- Emotional Events—such as exposure to recovery operations or witnessing injuries
Core Components of a CISM Include:
- Pre-Crisis Preparation
- Mobilization/Demobilization and Crisis Management Briefing (CMB)
- Defusing
- Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD)
- Individual (One-On-One) Crisis Intervention
