Barriers to Participation in Wellness Programs for the Central Oregon Spanish Speaking Community
Deschutes County Health Services (DCHS) is the regional license holder for and facilitator of Self-Management Programs (SMP’s) created at the Stanford University Patient Education Center. Currently DCHS is licensed to facilitate three distinct Self-Management workshops; Chronic Disease, Chronic Pain, and Diabetes. The Chronic Disease and Diabetes curricula are also available in Spanish.
One of the strategies identified in the 2016-2020 DCHS Strategic Plan is to ‘Monitor disease, health behaviors, disparities, social determinants, and other factors that affect health to assure programs and services meet documented needs.’ In light of that strategy, DCHS would like to offer SMP’s in Spanish.
In order to use our resources efficiently to meet the community’s needs, we need to accurately understand the needs of our Spanish-speaking population and Self-Management Programs using region specific research.
