Food Handler Certification Card

Environmental Health provides both Food Handler Training and Certification, as well as Certified Food Manager Courses and Exam Proctoring.

Food Handler Certification Cards

As of July 1, 1996 all restaurant employees and other commercial food establishment employees are required to obtain Food Handler Certification cards. Cards are issued after completion of a food handler test, which covers key critical control point procedures for preparing, handling, holding and storage of foods. The test consists of 32 questions and requires a passing score of 75%. Successful completion of the test earns a Food Handler Certification card that is accepted anywhere in the State of Oregon and is valid for 3 years.
The fee for taking this test is $10.00.

Certified Food Manager Courses and Exam Proctoring

Currently Deschutes County Environmental Health offers ServSafe Certified Food Manager courses throughout the year. Depending on staffing and schedule availability, we schedule a ServSafe Certified Food Manager Course approximately every quarter.

The ServSafe Certified Food Manager Class is a nationally-accredited, well respected and voluntary program that offers in-depth training on the prevention of foodborne illness, and has provided a tremendous public health benefit to food service providers and to the public. Kitchens with Certified Food Managers are proven to have fewer health code violations and fewer outbreaks than kitchens that operate without the benefit of this additional food safety training. Courses taught by Deschutes County Environmental Health staff have a $125 registration fee, which includes a book, a practice test, a full day, in-person, interactive class, a proctored exam, an exam answer sheet and, upon passing the exam, Food Protection Manager Certification valid for five years. The ServSafe book and answer sheet will be provided to participants upon registration and payment.

The ServSafe Certified Food Manager Course was developed by the National Restaurant Association and is accredited by ANSI.  Passing the exam with 70% grants the participant certification for five years.
