Flood Plain Information

General Information

The purposes of the Flood Plain Zone (Chapter 18.96) are to:

  • Implement the Comprehensive Plan Flooding Section
  • Protect the public from the hazards associated with floodplains
  • Conserve important riparian areas along rivers and streams for the maintenance of the fish and wildlife resources
  • Preserve significant scenic and natural resources while balancing the public interests with those of individual property owners in the designated areas.

Properties residing within a zoned floodplain will be required to carry flood insurance.

The Flood Plain Zone boundary is derived from the “Special flood hazard Areas” and updated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Amendments to the County’s Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Ordinance are being considered to change the Flood Plain zone from a base zone to an overlay zone.
